BlockAlert: A window into spam activity based on IP block hierarchy.

Internet User FAQ

Why am I here?
Well, spam is a big problem right now. People receive a lot of unsolicited commercial email (UCE) and unsolicited bulk email (UBE). Some of this UCE/UBE, commonly referred to as spam, is graphic in nature and even illegal. Attempting to opt out of reception generally only validates your address and ensures that you will receive even more spam.

What can I do about spam?
Good question. Unfortunately, it isn't easy to stop spam. A lot of bright people are working very hard to help solve this issue. If you take the time to learn to read email headers you can send complaints to proper responsible parties, but even then you'd have to know which ISP's are suitably responsible. In the mean time you might want to investigate spam filtering systems. You can filter spam on your own PC or via an online email provider. See our antispam links page for more information.

How can BlockAlert combat spam?
Our site won't stop you as an individual from receiving spam. It will help in the fight against spam by shining a spotlight on the providers and servers that are helping spammers profit at our expense. We as users pay for spam and all the resources it consumes in a myriad of ways including higher costs, wasted storage space, wasted time, slowed downloads and reduced connectivity -- possibly due to voluntary blocklists.

What is a blocklist?
Blocklists (or blacklists) commonly list locations or servers, by IP address, that have been known to engage in spamming behavior. While blocklists originally listed known sources, they are now being expanded to incorporate known destinations as well. People, generally Internet providers or network administrators within larger companies, can make use of these lists to deny connectivity to or from locations in a blocklist.

How many blocklists are there?
Good question. There are a lot. People make their own lists whenever they feel like it. Each list has its own criteria for inclusion and removal. We've picked some that appear to be commonly used and well maintained. Please do not ask us to track different lists unless you are willing to pay us to do so.
